Excavation is priced by volume — cubic yards of material moved — not by square footage or by the hour, though small jobs sometimes get quoted as a flat price once the yardage is worked out. A basement dig for a typical home runs somewhere between 150 and 400 cubic yards depending on depth and footprint; a footing trench for an addition might be 20 to 60.

The rate per yard falls as the job gets bigger. A 20-yard footing dig and a 2,000-yard commercial pad are different pricing problems even though the same machines do both — mobilization, setup, and access constraints are a bigger share of the cost on a small job than a large one.

What actually moves the price
